Summer Music Camps at Colonial Oak offer an immersive, enriching musical experience for children of all musical backgrounds and abilities. Students who already know how to play an instrument will spend the week learning and playing the music that helped shape the city of St. Augustine, from the days of the Conquistadors to the present! Even campers with no musical background can participate in musical activities through the camp chorus, through our special Maritime Music sessions, and through our Florida Native American tribal drumming and singing courses. With a counselor to camper ratio of 5:1, all students will receive plenty of individual attention and customizable curricular objectives. Camps are led by experienced, degreed teachers who love what they do. Faculty includes professors and choir directors from Florida colleges and universities. More experienced guitar students will learn Spanish music that would have been played on the streets of colonial St. Augustine, in both solo and ensemble settings. All campers will recreate some of the forgotten rituals of the town’s settlers. For example, the ‘Fromajadas’, performed with guitars and singers, can be recreated on the very streets where it was last performed in the 19th Century! All camps include a culminating performance at the end of the week, so students can show their new skills off to family and friends, on one of St. Augustine’s most unique and popular stages at Colonial Oak Music Park! Classes and individual lessons will take place in the historic Gallegos house on St. George Street. Campers will be provided a sack lunch and snacks. Percussion instruments, as well as a selection of wind and string instruments, will be available for use. Guitars, Ukuleles, and more will also be available for students to keep as part of a tuition + equipment package provided by Ancient City Performing Arts.
